When I don't know what to paint, I will dig out something from my old sketches. And then use the sketches, combining with my memories to paint a quick and spontaneous watercolor. It is kind of like my regular painting exercise. Sometimes I do get positive surprises. After painting for more than 30 years, I have realized that our human memory is truly powerful. We always strengthen our positive memories. The good foods I ate when I was young are always the best. And they don’t seem to taste the same anymore. When I go back to the same places and eat the same things, they kind of taste not as good. This kind of delusion is also great when it is applied in art. It fully strengthens the interpretation of our subject matters. Our memory somehow selective strengthens what we like. I often feel it when I paint spontaneously in watercolor. I truly enjoy this kind of working process.
