I sketched the outline of the subjects and lay in the 1^st layer of colors. I selected the dominant color (raw umber in this picture) and the direction of primary light source. The first layer was done with some color variation during the wash. This created more interesting color effect.

 

I painted the figure (center of interest) and colors around it. I normally use color contrast (hue and temperature) and value contrast to bring out the center of interest; in this picture --- red against blue (warm against cold) and bright against dark. I also placed in the foreground color. The foreground carried some raw umber to create some tension with the local color of the building. Therefore the foreground was unified into the composition.

I painted all the figures and added the birds to create composition balance, direction and depth of space in the composition.

I added in the details and calligraphic stroke marks to create the interest of transparent watercolor effect. Meantime I placed the darkest color to contrast the center of interest.

TONG Chin Sye 童振狮 (南洋风格 新加坡 第二代重要画家) A key artist representing the 2nd Generation Singapore Art.

Born in 1939, Tong Chin Sye is a renowned Singaporean multimedia artist graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). He won first prize in the PSA Art Competition in 1987 and has participated in many exhibitions both locally and abroad. He was invited to represent Singapore at the Flemish Watercolor Days held at Zaventen, Europe in 1998. 

A frequent traveler, Tong, with an open mind, continues to be inspired by architectural and cultural subject matters. Each new subject matter, be it a figures or an architectural structure, is well translated into his new spectrum of colors. All images captured by him never fail to present new excitement to viewers and art lovers. 

His watercolors paintings naturally blend in the beauty of Chinese calligraphy. Viewers are easily moved by the flow of lines and the dynamics of mark making. His strength in sketching and drawing allows him to compose and work directly through sketch reference made during his trips. This truly expands his scopes in composing and designing picture surface, differentiating him from many painters who work directly from photographic references. His choice of colors is a balanced mixture of personality and visual memory.

Tong works on all media including chinese painting, calligraphy, watercolor, oil and acrylic. With his variety of styles, Tong is the most sought after art instructor in Singapore. His students range from beginner painters to artists. He has conducted numerous talks and workshops including a watercolor appreciation lecture and demonstration at the Singapore Art Museum. 

Tong, the traveler

Tong is an incredible artist with upmost adventure spirits. He made trips to China, Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines and the Indonesian Island including Sulawesi, Sumatra, Medan Lake Tahoe. The trip to the Indian subcontinent stretched over a period of three months, including the ancient cities in the south, Darjeeling, Varanasi and up north to Kathmandu and Nepal. The trips also included Europe, the cradle of western civilization and birth place of western art. On these trips, he made various visits to museums and painted amply on location. Having assimilated and incorporated these ideas, he visited Egypt, Greece, Turkey to seek new inspiration. These places provided the themes of many works in a later series.

In 1999, he visited Vienna, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary and Venice, and made paintings within cathedrals. Over 10 years ago, he also traveled to the Latin American including Peru, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Chile. These places fulfilled a sense of adventure and still provide further thematic material for future projects.He visited Haiphong and Hanoi in Vietnam, the Holang Bay in Cambodia, Kampong Cham and the Angkor Wat. Related works from these excursions have been compiled into a series. In Nov 2000, he made a one month trip to Myanmar, Yangon, Bagan, PvinooIwin, Mandalay and Taunggyi.

Don't have the type of patience to paint it, but can't resist it, so instead, I painted my 'happiness' not flower. hahaha!

Art is utterly USELESS because SOMEONE has done the job for me!

Art is non-essential. Every morning I wake up and go to the toilet, someone has already designed the toilet bowl. When I brush my teeth, someone has designed the toothbrush, and someone has designed the case of the toothpaste nicely. When I prepare my breakfast, someone has designed the toaster, cups, glasses, and every single kitchen utensil. When I prepare to go out, someone has designed my clothes. I take out my shoes and socks, someone has designed them. I walk to the bus stop, someone has designed it nicely too. I get on the bus, someone has designed the seats and space. I reach my workspace, someone has designed the furniture. I work with a laptop, answer questions with my handphone, someone has designed them. It is lunchtime. I walk to the hawker center, someone has designed the table and chairs there so I just have to sit down and take my lunch. Someone has designed all the cups and plates too. When I complete my day of work and reach home, someone has designed my space, furniture, and every single item in my house. When I am ready to go to bed, someone has designed my bed and pillows. I switch on my nice aircon, someone has designed it. I normally sleep well and have sweet dreams because I don’t have to struggle and work like an artist who does all the non-essential work.

学美术一点用都没有，因为我已经拥有了完备的一切！

艺术不是必要的，每天早晨起床，我上厕所，已经有人设计好了马桶。当我要刷牙时，有人设计好了牙刷，有人设计好了很棒的牙膏盒。当我准备早餐时，有人设计好了烤面包机，杯子，玻璃杯和每一样厨房用具。当我准备外出时，有人设计好了我的衣服。我拿出鞋子和袜子，也有人已经设计好了。我步行到巴士车站，也有人对它进行了精心地设计了。我上车，有人设计好了座位和空间。我到了公司，有人设计好了办公的家私。我用笔记本电脑工作，用手机回答问题，也已经有人设计好了。午饭时间，我走到小贩中心，有人在那儿设计好了桌子和椅子，所以我只需要坐下来吃就行了；有人也设计好了所有的杯子和盘子。当我完成工作回到家中时，有人设计好了我的家，包括所有的家具和房子里的每件物件。当我准备上床睡觉时，有人设计好了我的床和枕头。我打开我的空调，也有人设计好了。我通常会睡得很好，做几个美梦，因为我不必像那些学美术的，过得艰苦，却干着些没用的事。
